How to spot a "fake" coach online?
Most coaches online are not coaches at all. And sometimes, they can create new problems instead of helping with the old ones. Here is a simple guide to spotting a "fake" coach online:
Hey,
It’s Alex.
This is a slightly long but important email. It can save you lots of money and time when you would need a coach.
Before I went to study coaching for a few years…
I didn’t put deep thought into the meaning of coaching and how people perceive it, especially online.
What I realized afterward is:
Most coaches online aren’t coaches at all.
And sometimes… If they have too big an ego or too much confidence, they can create new problems for you instead of helping with the old ones 🤷♂️.
We all can be vulnerable…
Especially when we have mental pain or chronic inner issues that we are dealing with. At these moments, we can be so hopeless that we find ourselves in the hands of the wrong people.
And the last thing we need is someone selling us a magic solution that won’t help us.
Look…
If it’s about business and doesn’t touch your:
Beliefs
Emotions
Traumas
There’s no problem with that. Basically, it’s mentoring.
It can be great to learn new skills from someone who already has the results you want.
The problem starts when “a coach” gives advice, educates you, and guides you when it’s about your personal inner problems.
These coaches don't know how to work specifically with you. They know how to give you a system that works for them.
Here’s a simple guide on how to spot a "fake" coach online:
Let’s start with the basics…
What is coaching, and why can it be the best thing for you?
The main purpose of coaching is to help you achieve what you want.
To solve, together with you, any obstacle, inner blocks, or life situations that prevent you from being the best version of yourself.
To take you from point A to B.
Coaching is all about improving how you see and interact with the world so you can improve your actions and results.
A coach does this by working with your:
Behavior
Beliefs
Patterns
Way of thinking
And even the way you communicate with yourself (the words you choose when you speak)
What is coaching NOT?
Today, when someone says: “Let me coach you”
People mean it as “Let me teach you something you don’t know”
Or even worse: “Let me solve your traumas because I solved mine”
In reality… A coach isn't allowed to do therapy under any circumstances. It’s the fastest way to lose your license.
License?
Yes… Exactly. Real coaches have a license.
There are a few recognized coaching certifications:
International Coach Federation (ICF)
Associate Certified Coach (ACC)
Center for Executive Coaching (CEC)
European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC)
For example, if a real coach wants to coach real leaders, politicians, or corporate executives, no one will work with them without one of these credentials.
What else?
Coaching also isn’t supposed to provide you with strict guidelines on how to manage your business, relationships, or life.
A good coach learns to detach their mind in the session so it won’t interfere with what the client is saying. It’s called: “Turning off your internal radio.”
In fact…
The less I know about your business or you, the better. This ensures that the coaching sessions are free from my biased assumptions and that I can uncover your potential faster.
Because in the end…
When you have an inner problem that you haven’t solved with a course, retreat, or workshop. Or when you REALLY want to achieve something in life.
It’s NEVER about more information from the outside.
It’s about information that can only come from YOU, from the inside.
The whole idea of coaching isn’t to solve your life; it’s to allow you to solve it yourself.
A real coach is a professional you come to when NOTHING else is working for you.
It’s when you’ve tried listening to so many mentors, but nothing changes. Because, in most cases, it isn't about the "tools" or life hacks.
It’s more about YOU.
